  A Chronology
12 May 1900 born in Düsseldorf.
1914 studies Chemigraphy in Frankfurt am Main.
1918 voluteer painter for the City Theater of Frankfurt.
1920-1924 Studies painting and graphic design at the Arts Institute in Frankfurt am Main. (under F. K. Delavilla).
1921-26 Scenic works for the "Frankfurt Artists Theater for Rhein and Main" and the City Opera of Frankfurt.
1926 moves in Berlin.
1929 works in Dresden as a painter and graphic designer; occasional work for theater.
through the stage director, starts studies of Marxism.
1932 member of the KPD (Communist Party of Germany).
1935 lost all employment opportunities. works for communist resistance groups.
1941-1945 jailed and sent to a Concentration Camp.
1945 released and returns to Dresden. Head of Stage Design for the Dresden Theater; helps rebuild the theater.
1947-49 also as general intendant for the Sachsen State Theater;
founds stage design classes for the Dresden Arts Institute.
(1946-1950) close working relationship with the opera director Heinz Arnold and coductor Joseph Keilberth
(1950-52) close working relationship with the conductor Rodolf Kempe.
1953 first engagement with the Berliner Ensemble (Katzgraben by Erwin Strittmater, directed by Bertolt Brecht).
1954 Head of Stage Design of the Berliner Ensemble;
holds master class at the Academy of the Arts.
1960 promoted to Professor.
1961 elected member of the Academy of the Arts.
